Many of these agreements include a transfer of copyright from\u00a0the author to the publisher. This process means that you have given away your economic rights\u00a0(the right to make money from your work) to the publisher. This is done to protect the interests of the publisher who will invest time and money in preparing a manuscript for publication.<\/p><p>It is important that you always read any publication agreement carefully before signing it to ensure that you are happy with what it says. Researchers subject to funder\u00a0<strong>Open Access mandates <\/strong>should\u00a0also check to\u00a0make sure\u00a0that the agreement they are signing is compliant with these. If you have signed a publication or copyright transfer agreement with a publisher then you may need their permission to share certain versions of your work unless it has been published under a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.cam.ac.uk\/copyright\/researchers\/creativecommons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creative Commons<\/a>\u00a0or other open license.<\/p><p>Many publishers will allow you to share\u00a0the final submitted version of a work\u00a0(the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/camacuk.zendesk.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115005898287-What-is-the-author-accepted-manuscript-AAM-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authors accepted manuscript)\u00a0<\/a>via institutional repositories such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/etd.uum.edu.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UUM Electronic Theses and Dissertation [eTheses]<\/a>. For more information check the publisher website or the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SHERPA\/RoMEO<\/a>\u00a0database which outlines publisher copyright policies.<\/p><p>Researchers wanting to share their work on social sites such as Academia.edu and ResearchGate should be especially careful of any copyright restrictions. Although these sites allow research to be shared they do not function as repositories and so do not meet Open Access requirements. The safest thing to do is to share a link to a legal online copy of your research on these sites. If researchers publish a piece of work with a commercial publisher it is likely that they will have signed some type of publication agreement transferring the copyright in that work to the publisher. Once this has happened it becomes subject to the\u00a0same rules as other third party material.
