Accessibility Statement for PSB UUM Websites

Perpustakaan Sultanah Bahiyah UUM is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone, and applying the relevant accessibility standards.

Measures to support accessibility

Perpustakaan Sultanah Bahiyah UUM takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of PSB UUM Websites:

  • Include accessibility as part of our mission statement.
  • Include accessibility throughout our internal policies.
  • Integrate accessibility into our procurement practices.
  • Appoint an accessibility officer and/or ombudsperson.
  • Assign clear accessibility targets and responsibilities.

Conformance status

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. PSB UUM Websites is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level A. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

Additional accessibility considerations

Although our goal is WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance, we have also applied some Level AAA Success Criteria such as :
a. Images of text are only used for decorative purposes.
b. Re-authentication after a session expires does not cause loss of data.
c. Some videos have sign language interpretation or subtitle.

  2. Not all videos are equipped with subtitles and mostly in English language: Users may have difficulties to understand the video content because most of the videos are third parties publication. We're in a process of translation by our own initiative. At the meantime please ask someone that capable to help you translate.

What is W3C Accessibility?

Web accessibility is the inclusive practice of ensuring there are no barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites, by people with disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, generally all users have equal access to information and functionality.

Therefore, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is developed through the W3C process in cooperation with individuals and organizations around the world, with a goal of providing a single shared standard for web content accessibility that meets the needs of individuals, organizations, and governments internationally.

The Definitions

The word disabilities in this context not only restricted to the needs of people with physical disabilities but also any people regardless their abilities or disabilities, software or equipment. These include people with physical and mental problem difficulties such as movement, hearing, blindness or unable to process information as normal people; people using text-only or small screen; people with slow internet connection; people who do not speak or understand the language provided; people who get distracted by a sudden condition and people who still uses an out of date version of browser or system. Meanwhile web accessibility can be easily interpreted as an ability for everyone regardless of their disability to engage, access, reach, enter or use from any domain within their environment or element. In fact if we look at it in other way around; it is a process of creating products or services that are usable by everyone within their abilities and operating within every possible situations or circumstances.
